Clients often arrive in coaching expressing frustration that they are being overlooked for promotion or new opportunities and resentful that their good work is not being acknowledged or recognised. When we explore the situation and gather feedback from key stakeholders it often becomes apparent that they are not aware of much of what the client has contributed or achieved.
This situation usually arises when clients carry a belief that it is not appropriate to brag or self-promote and that is completely reasonable however it is important to realise that there can be a price to pay for keeping your head down and just doing the work.
One of the key consequences of this strategy is seeing colleagues who you feel are less capable than you rising through the ranks.
There is also the potential for others to be taking credit for the work you are doing.
By not highlighting what you have to offer the organisation is also losing out on that potential and may end up losing you if you feel that progress is not possible in that environment.
If we look at the bigger picture, it is helpful to recognise that senior leaders are busy, focusing on their own priorities so they are unlikely to take time out to check on what you’re doing. By skilfully communicating what you are doing, making others aware of success or how you’ve overcome challenges you are not only demonstrating your growth and potential but also giving your team visibility. This can be framed as strategic communication it can open up possibilities for you to share your learning, support others with similar challenges, identify potential collaborations, share innovative solutions……. the list is long.
Could you benefit from some strategic communication?
